The Importance of Personal Branding

Personal Branding is your professional online identity and how you present and market yourself to the world. It’s a mixture of your individual ‘skills, experience, and traits’ (IMH, 2024) delivered through your tone, voice and image – including the “beliefs, feelings and attitudes that people collectively hold about you” (Avery & Greenwald, 2023). Essentially, personal branding is your reputation and what makes you memorable.

This important practice enables you stand out and create an authentic perception of yourself and your value reflected by how you live your life. A good reputation can attract new career opportunities, clarify goals, increase confidence in your abilities which leads to a ‘b sense of your authentic self’ and decreases feelings of impostor syndrome (Cote, 2024).

 

How to use social media for personal branding

“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room”, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon (Avery & Greenwald, 2023).

Using social media allows you to create valuable content that showcases your “expertise, voice, personality and passions to a large audience” (LinkedIn Community, 2023). Social media improves your visibility, providing unparalleled reach and access to new audiences. It allows you to engage and nurture connections with peers, clients, fans and potential employers in real-time and boosts opportunities for you to earn income provided by services and products linked to your brand (LinkedIn Community, 2023).

These platforms enable the display of regular content that fosters continual interactions through ‘comments, likes, shares, or direct messages’, that reinforce your brand message, helping build a sense of community and trust amongst your audience and elevating your reputation within your industry (Maestro, 2024).

 

Good examples of using social media for personal branding

To effectively harness social media for personal branding, you must adopt a multi-channel strategy that publishes innovative and authentic content across multiple platforms, e.g. Nike (Tripathi, 2024). You need to demonstrate a consistent and unified brand image across all platforms that use the same profile picture and bios; make regular posts that align with your brand story and include infographics, links, and hashtags to grab the attention of your audience e.g. #WeAccept Campaign by Airbnb (Barker, 2023). Lastly you must be active on your pages responding to comments, engaging in conversation and replying to shares and direct messages.

Today, successful personal branding is entwined with social media, involving a consistent multi-faceted approach.
