“While we cannot predict the future, we will most surely live it. Every action and decision we take – or don’t – ripples into the future. For the first time, we have the capability, the technology and the knowledge to direct those ripples” – Jacque Fresco
Hi, my name is Amie from Amie Amaral Digital. I am honoured to have the opportunity to speak at South By South West on “how audiences use technology and its impact on their lives.
So, how do audiences use technology today, how has it changed, and how does it impact our lives?
The reality today is, “we cannot live without technology”. Imagine a life without internet, mobile phones or Youtube, its almost incomprehensible!
Remember the old rotary dial phones? Taking nearly a 1 minute to dial the number before the call would connect?
Nowadays, technology is personal and portable and has simplified our lives. It is intwined in modern society and impacts the way we interact daily. From smartphone browsing (HOLD UP), to Facetime video calls on Ipads (HOLD UP), technology has transformed our lives well beyond sheer convenience – it has fundamentally altered how we communicate, live, work and learn.
Technology has been around for centuries… from the creation of the wheel in 3500 BCE, to the birth of the internet in 1969, and now, the all immersive technologies of modern life. However, with any benefit a new technology brings, there is always a positive and negative impact as a result.
If chosen to speak at SBSW, my speech will discuss the following key topics surrounding technology over the past 2 decades and provide current global statistics in relation to each.
I will provide a brief Introduction to Technology and the Internet. For example, did you know the moment the internet began in 1969, “when a student programmer at UCLA, Charley Kline sent the letter “l” and the letter “o” electronically 350 miles to a Stanford Research Institute computer in California. The letters stood for ‘login’.”
Next I will discuss How Audiences Access the Internet. For example, cable broadband, wireless and satelite, and give comparative insights into global adoption, current internet speeds and user and devices statistics. E.g. 67.5% of the global population have access to the internet today, compared to 7% in 2000, with the fastest internet speed is in Singapore at 213.18 Mb/s. Australia is ranked 94/100 with and average download speed of 51.25 Mbit/s.
Then I will look at How Audiences Search for Information, i.e., web search engines; focus groups, questionnaires and more. I will showcase the most popular e-commerce items bought online e.g. fashion and consumer electricals, and stats in relation to purchase habits and the types of digital devices used to do so. For example, the Smart phone and relevant device stats. I will also discuss how digital devices are used in modern life such as education, training, socially and more.
This then leads us to What Consumers Buy Online? and how? Thanks to smartphones making access personal and portable, consumers now buy items online, anywhere, anytime. I will showcase the new modern buyer process steps and divulge global e-commerce stats and revenue growth from 2014-2025, and identify buyer purchase habits, outlining the 10 most popular products purchased online from 2019-2024.
Another technological advancement is Online Video Consumption, the types of video streaming consumed, and the percentage of the global population using them. I will present statistics on the number of digital video viewers worldwide, along with the benefits of marketing to audiences using video. For example, 89% of consumers confirm they want to see more videos from brands.
Following this, I will look at Consumer Trends and 5 important changes technology has made over the last 5 years. For example, the rise of artificial intelligence and cloud-based programs, as well as identify the latest consumer tech trends in the last 5 years, unveiling the 5 biggest changes technology has made to modern life.
Next I will list the Pros and Cons of technology & its impact on audiences. Example Pros, inclusiveness, easy access to information and instant communication. Cons include, dependence on technology; increased mental health issues and unemployment.
Lastly, I will Summarise the key points of the presentation, highlighting key technological changes and impact on audiences over time.
Finally, to wrap up my presentation, a Video & Q&A’s supporting my presentation highlighting the critical importance of future ethical
considerations of technology on society and audiences. Because, for the first time in history, we have the ability to see a different future.
Thank you for your consideration.
